Objective: 

This course will enable the students to-

  1. To study the various biochemical pathways in plants and the structure of various biomolecules.
  2. To provide an overview of the plant biochemical and physiological processes that could be exploited both to reduce the environmental impact of modern agricultural practices and to develop strategies and tools to increase crop yield and quality

Plant Biochemistry

On completion of this course, the students will be able to;

CO73:  Illustrate and explain the structure and properties of Macromolecules

CO74:  Understand the biosynthesis of various secondary metabolites.

CO75:  Describe the mechanisms of Enzyme action, activation, catalysis and their properties.

CO76:  Classify various pathways for the biosynthesis of tannins, phenols and nitrogenous compounds.

Carbohydrates: Classification, structure and functions of monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides and glycoproteins including starch, cellulose and pectins.

Proteins: Structure of proteins: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary; Simple and conjugated proteins, Synthesis of amino acids by reductive amination and transamination, Zwitter ion; Nitrogen metabolism: N2 cycle, mechanism, biology and chemistry of nitrogen fixation, root nodulation, Nod factor, asymbiotic N2 fixation, GS-GOGAT system.

Fat metabolism: Saturated and Unsaturated fatty acids, Synthesis of long chain fatty acids; Structure, functions and biosynthesis of lipids, α-oxidation, β-oxidation

Enzymes: Structure and properties, concept of holoenzyme, apoenzyme, coenzyme and cofactors, regulation of enzyme activity, mechanism of action, Factors affecting enzyme activity, enzyme kinetics, Michaelis-Menten equation.

Secondary metabolites: Structure and functions of secondary metabolites: Alkaloids and tannins, cardiac glycosides and anthocyanins.
