Title: Environment- Our ‘Soul’ for Living

Resource Person: Professor Amla Batra

Date: 30th September 2015, Wednesday

An incredibly SOULFUL Guest Lecture was organized by the Department of Botany, IIS University in the College Campus that took place between 12:00 noon- 1:00 pm. The lecture was headed by none other than Professor Amla Batra, a prominent name in the field of botany, a renowned and headstrong personality and without a doubt, a highly important asset to our society. The whole lecture was based on the topic- ENVIRONMENT: our “soul” without which we are absolutely Powerless! The students were enriched about various biotic and abiotic factors that constitute our environment and how directly or indirectly these factors affect our biosphere and its level of organization, ecosystem and the changing environment that represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing our ‘Mother Earth’. The students were briefed about the challenges that the planet is struggling through like- population explosion, uncontrolled large scale urbanization and industrialization, global warming that has, in the recent times, succeeded to represent itself as a major international issue, large scale mining, over exploitation of flora and fauna for innumerable human temptations and desires, high levels of pollution etc. She also spoke about the Electromagnetic pollution that has become prevalent these days due to the large scale use and manufacture of techno gadgets to satisfy the human needs and to make our work easy and fast. In an interactive session with the resource person, the students were introduced to numerous important uses of plants and trees, for example- oxygen- carbon dioxide balance in the ecosystem, medicines, paper, wood, fruits, pulses, ayurvedic ‘jadibootis’ etc.  and persuaded our young minds to ponder over the issue, believe and work hard in our own little ways to make the conservation process a grand success… with the help of an outstandingly motivation quote-

“Mene khol di hai khushboo ki bhatti…

Ab hawao tumhari baari hai..

Mene toh nibha li hai apni zimmedari…

Ab yuvaon tumhari baari hai!”
