One Week Workshop on Histology

The Centre for Research, Innovation and Training (CRIT) and Department of Botany of IIS (deemed to be University), Jaipur organized a one week workshop on ‘Histology’ for research scholars, PG and PG students of the school of Life Sciences. Total 42 students participated who were from different institutes like Department of Botany, UOR, Jaipur, Kanoria PG Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Jaipur, Parishkar College, Jaipur, Manipal University Jaipur, .S. Jain Subodh PG College Jaipur, Jaipur National University, Jaipur and IIS (deemed to be university). The activity conveners were: Prof. Shilpi Rijhwani and Dr. Himangini Rathore Hooja.

The session commenced with a warm welcome to all the students of the gathering.

Prof. K.S. Sharma, CRIT Director, inaugurated the workshop and Prof. P. J. John, Dean, School of Sciences delivered welcome address. The resource person Dr. Yashmin Akhtar, Assistant Professor at Muslim Balika Mahavidyalaya, M D road, Jaipur introduced various aspects of histology, highlighting its importance in life science research. A powerpoint presentation was used to explain different aspects of Histology in profundity and precision.  Dr. Yashmin Akhtar discussed about basics and research in histology, a branch of biology that studies the microscopic anatomy of biological tissues. She also explained that aim of histology is to determine how tissues are organized at all structural levels, from cell to organ. The workshop imparted knowledge to students on fixing tissue of Plant and Animal in different fixative agents and right way to process the tissue stain.

On Day one, the workshop started with the primary step, fixation procedure of plants and animal tissues. On Day Two the Dr. Yashmin Akhtar elaborated the dehydration step significant for making good slides. Embedding step was highlighted on the third day, while sectioning was detailed on the fourth day. Staining, using various stains was planned and carried on the fifth day. Observation and interpretation was made on the last day of the workshop. Each and every procedure was practically demonstrated by resource person in simple and understandable way and all the participants were occupied wholly. The workshop was coordinated well by Dr Smita Purohit, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Botany and Dr Radhika Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology. The workshop was very knowledgeable for all the research scholars and other students as one has to be good enough in tools and must know about scientific techniques of histology to carry research work related to it.

Objectives of the Workshop:-

  • To gain knowledge of advanced techniques for analyzing various tissue samples.
  • To comprehend the staining techniques used for studying plant and animal tissues
  • To know various types of microscopy to visualize internal structures
  • Providing knowledge on fixing plant and animal tissues in different fixatives
  • To inspire students for histological research
  • To  make participants better informed about the chances in the field of histology
  • The program intended to train the participants in histology to unravel tissue architecture.

The workshop completed with the visualization of the thorough internal structure of plant and animal tissue in the microscope. All the objectives of the workshop were evidently accomplished and the participants were successfully skilled at making clear sections and slides in histological research.
