The discipline of Botany had organized an awareness drive on 10 March 2023 to Vishwkarma Industrial Area, Jaipur, as an extension activity. The objective of this activity was to generate awareness regarding use of plant based dyes amongst the skill labours of textiles and carpet industry.

The students of M.Sc. semester II and IV (Botany) escorted by Dr. Smita Purohit had visited Shobhit Industries, Lane No. 9, V.K.I., Jaipur. This is a chemical dyeing plant wherein different types of chemicals dyes are being used. These dyes are harmful for the environment as they leach down to the underground water table and also pollute the soil. The affected soil has high levels of heavy metal like silver, lead, nickel, chromium, mercury to name a few and is not suited for cultivation.

The students made the industry people aware of these harmful effects and suggested them to substitute the chemical dyes with natural plant based dyes. The students demonstrated the extraction of natural dyes from different materials- yellow colour from Nyctanthes arbor flower, Red colour from Maddar roots, Blue from Indigofera tinctoria, Orange and Golden from pomegranate peel. They also demonstrated the process of dyeing of various yarns available in the factory. The natural dyes are not only ecofriendly but also less harmful for the workers. The students had submitted and exhaustive list of plants from which different dyes can be extracted.
